NYC Cognitive Behavioral specializes in state-of-the-art mindfulness informed Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. Our centers are currently the only treatment centers in Brooklyn and Suffolk County with staff certified by the Academy of Cognitive Therapy. Many therapists refer to themselves as “cognitive therapists”, but very few are actually credentialed cognitive therapists. Furthermore, Dr. Sisti, also is a peer reviewed Acceptance and Commitment Therapist which integrates the newest generation experiential CBT philosophies and interventions. We focus on a full range of treatment needs, from making difficult life changes to addressing more complex diagnostic syndromes. Our commitment is to help our patients take effective action, live in a more balanced manner and become your most courageous self.
What services are available?
We are committed to providing the latest scientifically supported treatments to our patients. While the most common problems treated are anxiety disorders and depression, cognitive behavioral therapy has been proven effective for a variety of psychological problems.
Individual Therapy:
The majority of patients at our center are utilizing individual therapy. We provide a variety of experienced therapists to address the entire age range of patients, from preschoolers to senior citizens. Most of our individual therapy is scheduled on a once a week basis, with sessions lasting 45 minutes. More frequent weekly visits are sometimes recommended for more intense issues or faster progress.
Children & Adolescents:
Our therapists are also trained to meet the special needs of children with emotional and behavioral difficulties. Especially with younger children, we help parents to simultaneously improve parental effectiveness and parental coping skills. Adolescents and their parents are often both facing a variety of stressful developmental changes, so individual adolescent sessions are often complimented with parent individual and family sessions.
Couples:
In addition to individual therapy, we offer relationship focused therapy for all types of relationships, traditional, LGBT, sex positive and consensually open. Our staff has been trained in relationship strengthening, skill based relationship therapies such as, Integrative Cognitive Behavioral Couples Therapy (ICBT) and Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT). Contemporary relationship therapy helps partners to balance mutual problem solving with acceptance, challenging our relationship expectations. Other skills used to help develop and maintain intimate relationships include; positive tracking, active listening, pleasure planning, creating safe attachments, and challenging marital assumptions.
Groups:
Groups can be a powerful compliment to individual therapy and are sometimes used to supplement individual therapy. Depending on the need, we offer a variety of time-limited treatment groups (e.g. social phobia, panic & agoraphobia, mood disorders, etc.). Community support groups are also utilized to give sufferers and their families a chance to provide mutual support, exchange experiences regarding living with these disorders and decrease isolation and stigmatization.
Current Groups:
Interpersonal Skill Groups: Awareness Courage & Love Meetup Group: www.meetup.com
Creative Relationship Sex Positive Support Groups: Mens & Womens Support ENM Group
Professional Training and Supervision:
An equally important aspect of the center’s mission is our commitment to advancing the general knowledge of traditional cognitive behavioral therapies (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) through the training of mental health professionals. Our center provides training for mental health professionals looking to learn traditional CBT as well as third wave therapies such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). As a certified trainer in CBT, and as a peer reviewed trainer in ACT, we provide all levels of training from the fundamentals of cognitive therapy to those seeking to advance beyond the basics of cognitive therapy. The center is affiliated with several local universities (Long Island University, Hofstra, CW Post, Albert Einstein) and provides ongoing supervision for doctoral externs and interns. The staff also provides cognitive therapy seminars and symposia. These are intermittently offered through the center and/or in conjunction with various outside agencies and institutions. Research into CBT & ACT is also an ongoing aspect of what keeps the center current. Advancing the scientific bases of CT is also an ongoing commitment of the center.
